Karl Horlander - Attorney
Karl Horlander joined Withrow Terranova as an associate in April 2010. Mr. Horlander specializes in the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark matters before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
He is involved in patent preparation and prosecution in such diverse technologically areas as communication technologies, analog and digital circuitry and systems, video processing systems and applications, financial systems, computational intelligence applications and automotive systems. Prior to joining Withrow Terranova, Mr. Horlander was an associate at a large Chicago based intellectual property law firm.
Mr. Horlander is registered to practice before the United States Patent Trademark Office without territorial restriction. Mr. Horlander is licensed to practice law in the State of Indiana, but is not currently licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina.

- Developing video amplifier with automated gain control circuitry for smart weapon control system; developing multilayer system board for guidance system of smart weapons; system integration; general system design; analyzing end-to-end video transmission and receiving system for smart weapons.
- Developing digital video processing system; developing and simulating digital processing system elements on Princeton super computer; implementing chip-level system based simulation and design validation, and designing digital video processing systems on FPGA and gate arrays with VHDL.
- Developing audio/video distribution system including participation in EIA standards development; representing Thomson Consumer Electronics at various standard groups including EIA, VESA, and Intel-Microsoft-Honeywell-Thomson working group.
- Lead hardware engineer responsible for developing first generation HDTV audio/video processing system including responsibility for microprocessor system, video decoding and processing, system control, and EMI performance. System included NTSC and HDTV terrestrial television receivers and DSS-DBS satellite receiver.
- Lead hardware engineer for second generation HDTV system including IC selection, system analysis, and general design issues. System analysis included developing random access - multi-memory user model software to estimate memory bandwidth related performance metrics, and investigating incorporation of hard drive computer storage for DVR applications. System included NTSC and HDTV terrestrial television receivers and DSS-DBS satellite receiver.
- Lead hardware engineer for first generation DSL / VDSL video distribution set top box system. Responsibilities included designing and validating overall system design including simulation of memory architectures and layout; developing overall system implementation strategy including microprocessor system, video decoder system, system board layout, and implementing EMI reduction and compliance strategies. In addition, responsible for overall system hardware performance including video and audio processing and home networking, and investigating introduction of computer hard drive based DVR application.
